Allan Rasmussen

I would like to welcome you to South Central Interior Distance Education School (SCIDES).  My name is Allan Rasmussen and I am the Grade 12 Homeroom Teacher.

I was born in Odense, Denmark, the hometown of Hans Christian Andersen.  My mother and I moved to Canada to be with my father when I was very young.  I spent 18 years in Summerland before heading to Vancouver to attend UBC.  After earning my degree in Mathematics and Physics, I taught in a regular classroom in Merritt for 29 years – Choir, Physical Education, Physics 11 & 12, Data Processing 11 & 12, and Computer Science 11 & 12.  However, my first love was, and still is, teaching Mathematics.  This has been my core subject throughout my career, and I have experience teaching Math from Grades 4 – 12, including Calculus.  As well, I have marked Provincial Exams for both Physics 12 and Math 12 many times over the years.

I am married with two daughters.  My wife is a Primary teacher and during her years in Merritt, she has actually spent quite a bit of time at SCIDES.  My oldest daughter is taking her Masters in Occupational Therapy at UBC and my youngest is in her third year taking a combined degree in Psychology and Community Rehab & Disabilities.  To say that I am proud of all of them is an understatement!

In my spare time, which never seems to be enough, I enjoy listening to a wide variety of music, getting lost in a good book, or watching an entertaining movie.  As well, I’m taking piano lessons (RCM grade 5/6).  I love it!  And when the weather is warm and dry, I enjoy racing down the highway on my road bike imagining that I’m Lance Armstrong!

In addition to being responsible for all of the Grade 12 students, I’m also the resident Math Tutor at SCIDES.  Anytime that you have a question or you need some help with a concept that is causing you grief, all you need to do is phone me or email me.  Teaching Calculus 12 Online – Introduction to Calculus makes for an exciting time to be involved in Distributed Learning!
