Tips For Completing Scholarship Applications
-Start early!
Applying for scholarships is a lot of work and you want to make sure that you leave yourself enough time to complete them thoroughly.
-Neatness is extremely important. Remember that for every scholarship offered there are hundreds of applications so make sure that you don’t jeopardize your chances by submitting an application that is messy and full of errors. Check to see whether the application is to be typed or handwritten.
-Proofread your application and then ask someone else to proofread it as well. Check for spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors.
-If you write an essay and it asks for (example) 500 words – do not go over this limit! This criterion is written out for a reason and if you cannot follow instructions, your application may not be considered.
-Do not leave any blanks. If a question does not pertain to you, write that down in the space provided.
-If you do not understand a question, phone the contact number and ask what they are looking for.
-Check to see when the scholarship application is due and make sure that you have it in on time. Late applications are usually not accepted. Some applications differentiate between when the application has to be received in the office and when the application has to be post-marked by.
-Make sure that you are eligible for the award that you are applying for. Completing scholarship applications is a lot of work and you want to make sure that you are eligible before you start.
-If you are asking for reference letters make sure that you give your referees enough time to write the letter. You should also give them a copy of your resume and let them know specifically what you need.
-Make a copy of your completed application and reference letters before you send it
off.
Good Luck!
