Adult Graduation FAQ

Is the Adult Graduation Diploma the same as the GED?
No, the Adult Graduation Diploma is a true graduation and you receive the B.C. Ministry of Education Dogwood certificate, which is the same document that school age students receive who are graduating from a regular secondary school.

Can I be granted credit for courses completed else where?
Yes, both high school courses and college courses are acceptable as long as we can determine a B.C. equivalent. If you completed the course in a B.C. Post-Secondary Institution or Ministry accredited High School, there should be no problem.

Is there a tuition fee?
There are no tuition fees for courses. There is, however, a refundable course deposit of $100.00 per course.

Do I have to buy textbooks?
No, our refundable course deposit covers this. However, if you do not return textbooks, there may be additional charges.

Is there a time limit for completion of the program?
No, you are not restricted in the amount of time for completion of your program.

How long do I have to complete a course?
You will have one year from the date of enrolment to finish a course. This time may be extended under certain circumstances. Online courses usually run only between September and June, therefore you must complete them within that time.

How many hours does a course usually take to complete?
Usually 100 – 120 hours. Courses with a significant literature component may take a bit longer.

Can I take a course on-line?
Yes, many courses are available on-line but you must enrol in them prior to September 30th for a September start date.

How many courses are required to graduate?
The minimum is 20 credits or 5 courses. A full course is 4 credits. At least 3 courses must be completed after you have reached the age of 19 years.

What courses are required?
English or Communications 12, a grade 11 Mathematics or Accounting course, two grade 12 courses of your choice and either Social Studies 11 or an additional grade 12 course.

Do I have to write Provincial Exams?
No, but if you plan on attending a college or university you should check with the specific institution to see if they require you to do so.

How old must I be to be admitted to the program?
Normally you must be at least 19 years old. The Principal has the authority to make an exception for those 18 years old who have been out of school for a minimum of one year.

Can I qualify for Provincial Scholarships?
Yes, the same rules apply for adults as for school age students.

Is there any financial aid available?
No, the Provincial Government gives no direct financial aid to enrol in our program.

Is anything other than the application required to register?
You should send a copy of a transcript or permanent record listing all course completions as well as any textbook fees.

What if I’m not academically prepared to start grade 11 and 12 courses?
We are able to provide a program of upgrading that should allow you to participate in the required courses in a relatively short time.

Am I able to receive the Passport to Education coupon?
Yes, but you must complete 5 courses within the regular school year to qualify.

Can I use previously granted Passport to Education coupons to pay for any fees?
No, the use of Passport to Education coupons is only applicable to post-secondary programs.

Is help available if I have a problem with some aspect of the course?
Yes, your marker is also available to act in a tutorial capacity.
